The Lab’s outreach effort to community colleges is extended by the IT internship program, which works with local institutions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area region. The program goals include:
- Supporting the Lab’s stewardship goals by making contact with a diverse group of faculty and students.
- Providing community college faculty feedback on technical positions in industry.
- Providing interns with a wide exposure to real-world IT job experiences.
- Developing industry-relevant technical skills: Mac OS/Windows; desktop / laptop / tablet / mobile support; networking; programming.
- Developing job-eligible soft skills: clear communication, tact and clarity in dealing with customers, reliable and prompt response.
Outreach Programs

Elementary School Outreach Program
The IT Division administers an annual 3-day educational learning program for local second graders within the Berkeley Unified School District.

Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) NPWE Internship
This program provides meaningful work experience to veteran participants who are no longer on active duty. Interns are paid a monthly allowance by the VA.See the NPWE Program Manual (Berkeley Lab login required).

SOAR for Youth
SOAR for Youth, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in 2009 to provide high-quality support, opportunities, and rapport that foster youth would have otherwise received from their parents.
