Beginning July 10, 2025, the Help Desk will transition away from supporting Windows 10. If you haven’t upgraded to Windows 11, now is the time—approximately 2,000 users in the Berkeley Lab community will lose support unless they take action. Without the upgrade, your ability to use Windows software and receive essential security updates may be impacted.
Why Now?
Microsoft is ending security updates for Windows 10, which means systems running Windows 10 will become increasingly vulnerable to security breaches and additional issues. To ensure a smooth transition and maintain secure access to applications and services, we strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 11 by July 10th, 2025.
Why Upgrade to Windows 11?
Windows 11 offers several enhancements:
- Modern User Interface: A sleek design with a centered Start Menu and rounded windows.
- Improved Start Menu: Featuring pinned apps and a built-in search bar.
- Widgets: Customizable panels for weather, news, and calendar events.
- Updated Apps: Refreshed versions of File Explorer, Microsoft Store, and more.
- Integrated Microsoft Teams: For seamless communication and collaboration.
- Snap Layouts: Efficient window organization for multitasking.
- Better Security: Enhanced protections and support for newer hardware standards.
How to Upgrade
You can perform the upgrade yourself by following step-by-step instructions here:
Windows 10 End of Support and Upgrade to Windows 11
Before upgrading, make sure to:
- Back up your files—ideally to Google Drive or Druva.
- Allow about an hour for the upgrade, preferably at the end of your workday.
If you need help, contact the Help Desk at help@lbl.gov. Support is available via phone or Zoom (we recommend setting aside 1–2 hours). If your hardware doesn’t meet Windows 11 requirements, it may be time to request a new device—most are replaced every 4 years (laptops) or 5 years (desktops). Oversized or non-standard equipment can be discussed with IT for a tailored solution.
Take the Compatibility Assessment Seriously
The upgrade is not optional—failure to move to Windows 11 could result in loss of access to Windows software and stored data. Don’t wait. Upgrade today to ensure continued support and security.
