The Science IT department in the Information Technology division is looking for several graduate student interns for flexible appointments (up to 20 hours a week during the academic year and up to 40 hours a week during school breaks). We are seeking diverse candidates in a broad range of scholarly disciplines with a desire to learn more about research data and scientific computing.
Under the supervision of Science IT consultants and/or HPC User Service consultants, the successful candidates will work with Berkeley Lab researchers to understand their research needs and facilitate access to computing resources that might best support them. The candidates will learn about and support the research data and scientific computing tools and services that are used in research projects across Berkeley Lab.
Key Responsibilities
- Help lab researchers leverage computing and data resources by meeting with them to understand aspects of their research that rely on, or could be aided by, data or computational methodologies, and helping them gain access to resources.
- Education and outreach: developing and delivering training and outreach materials in response to researcher needs.
- Documenting solutions to research challenges: contributing to existing documentation in response to researcher needs, and developing use cases to inform new service development.

Required Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in a full-time graduate student program at an accredited college or university. Proof of enrollment is required.
- Experience as a researcher in a compute- and/or data-intensive research area at the graduate level
- Experience or interest in any of the following areas: high performance computing, cloud computing, research data, virtual machines
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism
- Strong interpersonal skills in working with both technical and non-technical personnel at different levels in the organization
- Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team
