Job Title: Student Assistant – Scientific Computing Group
Position Description:
Student assistance providing end-user support as follows:
- Assist with the installation, configuration, and testing hardware and software for Linux systems used for scientific computing
- Provide junior level operating system and cybersecurity support for Linux systems and high performance computing clusters
- Installation and support of server equipment in a large data center
- Compilation and installation of operating system and open source software to support scientific applications
- Hardware and software troubleshooting. Work with vendors to resolve issues.
- Provide end user support to help researchers use high performance computing systems. This includes helping with user accounts, compilation of programs, use of MPI (message passing interface), use of job scheduler, and transfer of data.
- Development of scripts or programs. Examples include automating and monitoring system administration functions and generating reports.
- Documentation of equipment and procedures
Required:
- Full time student enrolled in a 2 or 4 yr degree program.
- Experience with Linux systems administration or using Linux for software development.
- Proficiency in a procedural language such as C, C++, Java or Python.
- Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and make good use of unstructured time
- Ability to accept feedback and work with technical staff and researchers in a professional environment.
- Good attendance and punctual
Desired
- Computer Science major or Science major with computer science background
- Experience building and troubleshooting PC hardware
- Previous experience providing Linux systems administration and containers support
- High performance computing or parallel programming experience
- Use of Amazon AWS or Google GCP to accomplish research
- Networking or cybersecurity background
