
The IT Division is pleased to welcome Jeff Woodbury as the new IT Support Services Group Lead, overseeing Embedded Support, Endpoint Management, and Workstation Support and Berkeley Lab’s Help Desk group. Jeff brings a rich and varied background to Berkeley Lab, with deep experience spanning higher education, technology strategy, and operational excellence.
Jeff’s career began in an unexpected place: as a Professor of French after earning his degree from UCLA. While working at Columbia University, he discovered that his passion for languages intersected with technology, especially in supporting less commonly taught languages. That realization set him on a path into the IT organization at Columbia, where he helped demonstrate the critical role IT could play across the university — from admissions and financial aid to student life and development.
His leadership extended nationally through his involvement with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), where he helped set IT standards from kindergarten through graduate programs. He also worked at the University of Oregon, where his work expanded to supporting not only educators but also clinical operations, with an emphasis on systems compliant with HIPAA regulations.
Throughout his career, Jeff has enjoyed mentoring interns and building pathways for future technologists. “I’m excited to carry forward that spirit at Berkeley Lab — creating opportunities for interns to thrive and giving them meaningful experiences that will shape their careers,” he said.
Drawn to Berkeley Lab’s research mission, Jeff is eager to align his expertise with supporting the Lab’s researchers, operations, and administrative teams.
“We’re moving to be more proactive,” Jeff explained. “Our goal is to partner closely with divisions, helping them grow and achieve their goals by listening, learning, and being agile. We’ll improve our stewardship of Lab resources while creating an environment where our team can focus on higher-touch, strategic work.”
