Background
As part of a recent Department of Energy requirement, Berkeley Lab will be implementing warning banners more prominently than before. While previously you may have acknowledged a warning banner when using the VPN, logging onto a secure system, or taking the annual SEC203 training, warning banners will soon be present at every computer login, during single sign on authentication, and elsewhere.

FAQ
What is changing?
There is no change in Lab policy or practice. This is simply a renewed effort to display the warning banner in more places. These banners will serve as a reminder that work conducted on Lab-provided computers is subject to review by DOE and should not be considered private. This has always been the case.
Why is this happening now?
The Department of Energy asked Berkeley Lab to adjust our warning banner implementation to be more prominently displayed to the Lab community.
Do other labs do this?
Yes, all other Office of Science Labs have similar warning banners in place.
Can I opt out of having a warning banner on my device?
There is no opportunity to opt-out of the warning banner requirement.
What actions do I need to take?
Berkeley Lab IT is developing implementation guidance and will update Lab staff on specific actions to take in the near future. This FAQ will be updated with additional information at that time.
