To support Berkeley Lab researchers and staff in managing cloud computing costs, the IT Division is introducing a Cloud Allowance Program. This initiative helps offset expenses while ensuring continued access to essential cloud services and security tools.
How It Works:
- If you spend less than $25 per month on cloud services, your costs will be fully covered.
- If you spend more than $25 per month, you will receive a $25 credit toward your total cloud bill.
This program is designed to reduce financial barriers and make cloud resources more accessible to the Lab community. It ensures that you can continue using cloud services and supports the adoption of new security tools at no cost to you.
Why This Matters:
- Lower costs: Most users will have their cloud expenses completely covered.
- Financial relief for researchers: Get predictable cloud budgeting with built-in support.
- Seamless access to tools: Continue using cloud resources without cost concerns.
As cloud computing becomes increasingly important to researchers doing scientific research, the IT Division has implemented this cloud allowance to encourage the use of cloud computing in addition to the use of Lawrencium through the PI Computing Allowance. By offering this $25/mo allowance, we are anticipating this will cover the cloud computing costs for over half the users.
The Cloud Allowance Program aligns with similar initiatives at other national labs, ensuring that Berkeley Lab users benefit from the latest advancements in cloud accessibility and security. No action is needed—this allowance will be applied automatically to all users of Berkeley Lab cloud accounts.
