This week, Berkeley Lab will be launching a redesigned Passkeys Management Dashboard and will feature a self-service feature called “Passkey Holiday” coming soon. Together, these updates will make it easier for employees to manage their passkeys, monitor account changes, and temporarily access legacy tools that do not yet support passkey authentication with a one time password (OTP) for multi-factor authentication (MFA).
The refreshed dashboard is available at go.lbl.gov/managepasskeys.
“The redesigned dashboard gives employees a simpler and more transparent way to manage their passkeys, while the Passkey Holiday feature addresses a practical need during our transition,” said Luis Corrales, Collaboration Services Department Head, IT Division. “Employees will have temporary access to tools that still require a one-time password without weakening the long-term security benefits passkeys provide.”
Temporary OTP Access With Passkey Holiday
Passkeys are replacing traditional one-time passwords, or OTPs, because they provide stronger protection against phishing and other account-based attacks. However, some legacy tools, workflows, and services do not yet support passkey authentication.
The “Passkey Holiday” will provide a temporary solution. After signing in to the Passkey Management Dashboard at go.lbl.gov/managepasskeys with a passkey, employees can select Request Passkey Holiday. For the next 10 minutes, login prompts can fall back to OTP authentication, allowing access to services that are not yet passkey compatible.
Once the 10-minute period ends, the account will automatically return to requiring a passkey for subsequent logins. Employees should note that a passkey will still be required to access the dashboard and request a Passkey Holiday.
A More User-Friendly Passkey Dashboard
The redesigned Passkey Management Dashboard introduces several improvements:
- Cleaner navigation: A new side menu will make it easier to move between dashboard sections and manage registered passkeys.
- Integrated support: Links to instructions, documentation, and support resources will be available directly within the dashboard.
- Real-time notifications: Employees will automatically receive an email whenever a passkey is added, renamed, or deleted from their account.
- Passkey Holiday access: The dashboard will include the option to request a temporary return to one-time password authentication.
Email notifications will provide an additional layer of security by helping employees quickly identify unexpected changes to their passkeys. If you receive an alert about a change you did not make, contact the IT Help Desk promptly.
Additional information will be shared when both features become available. For assistance, please contact the IT Help Desk through IT Chat.
