LBLnet supports IP Multicast on most user subnets (please call x4357 for more information). This is accomplished by the use of Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM — in dense-sparse mode) internally, with Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP) for the discovery of active sources in the Internet. Currently, the LBLnet Services Group enables “multicast snooping” on user subnets with high levels of multicast traffic. Multicast snooping is the capability of some Ethernet switches to respond to multicast join messages by presenting multicast traffic to ports where the join message originates. This feature helps to prevent unnecessary multicast traffic from wasting port bandwidth.
