The Building 54 cafeteria and Pers Hall at Berkeley Lab permanently closed on November 11, 2022 in order to start work on the Seismic Safety and Modernization (SSM) project. Part of the Lab’s long-planned modernization effort, the SSM project will create a modern, flexible space to meet Berkeley Lab’s dining, health services, and conference space needs. Visit the SSM website to learn more.
The Berkeley Lab (LBNL) Research Library and Reading Lounge, formerly housed in a room located underneath the cafeteria, will be closed until the new building is completed.
What happened to the books formerly located in the Building 50 library?
The books that were located in the Building 50 library are now stored in Lab warehouses. The IT Research Library is currently negotiating an agreement with UC to move the books to their final location at the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF), a cooperative UC library storage facility in Richmond, CA.
The shared storage space will still make it easy for staff to request books on demand while decreasing operating and storage costs for the Lab. The remaining equipment will be moved to various IT Division spaces.
To get access to books during the relocation, check out Books for more information.
Please send questions and feedback to library@lbl.gov. Thank you for your patience.
Are scientific journals included in the move?
As all but a handful of our scientific journals are accessed by electronic means, they will not be impacted by the move. Check out Journals for more information.
Can staff still borrow and return library materials?
Yes, please see the guidance below for further information or read this article on How to Access Library Resources for helpful screenshots.
Borrow Books
Use UC Library Search to locate items held by LBNL, UCB or UC libraries. This will bring up both print and electronic books. Requested books can either be picked up at UCB campus libraries or at the Laboratory. The LBNL pickup shelf is located just outside 50B-2231. (Turn left as you exit the elevator on the second floor.)
UC Library Search is the University of California’s new unified discovery and borrowing system. Refer to the UC Library Search User Guide for more help with searches.
