All Verizon and AT&T smartphones include an international plan that automatically provides you with international coverage during your travels abroad. You are charged only on the days you use your phone outside of the USA, Canada, or Mexico.
For trips of two weeks or more, cost-effective alternatives may be available. Please contact Telephone Services to discuss other options available to you by submitting a Service Request on the IT Support Portal under Cellular Travel.
Your Built-In International Travel Plan
AT&T and Verizon users already have international travel plans active on their phones. When you travel outside of the USA, Canada or Mexico, the plan automatically activates for you wherever your carrier’s service is available.
These plans are already part of your service now.
AT&T Day Pass
Ready whenever you travel abroad
- Cost: $7.00 per 24 hours – Charged only on the days you use your phone. Not charged while in Canada or Mexico.
- Unlimited Data and Text Messaging – Consider using Wi-Fi for large downloads, as this plan may slow the speed after excessive data use.
- Bills your voice calls as if you were making calls from the USA.
- Best suited for voice calls and texting.
AT&T’s Day Pass is not available in all countries (check here for a list).
Verizon Travel Pass
Ready whenever you travel abroad
- Cost: $5.00 per 24 hours – Charged only on the days you use your phone. Not charged while in Canada or Mexico.
- Unlimited Data and Text Messaging – Consider using Wi-Fi for large downloads, as this plan may slow the speed after excessive data use.
- Bills your voice calls as if you were making calls from the USA.
Verizon’s Travel Pass is not available in all countries (check here for a list – please note the daily rate shown on their list does not apply to LBNL).
Avaya Workplace – avoid cellular roaming fees
Lab phone numbers can be used on a smartphone or computer using a soft phone app called Avaya Workplace. If you already have an existing Lab extension, there is no extra cost for this service.
- Avoid cellular roaming charges when traveling abroad. Whenever your AT&T or Verizon default plan is not available in a specific country, use the Avaya Workplace app to make US calls using your Lab phone number at no extra cost. Standard international call rates apply for calls to other countries. The app works over Wi-Fi or your data plan, bypassing costly carrier cellular roaming fees.
- Keep your cell phone number separate. Use your Lab phone number for incoming and outgoing calls using the Avaya Workplace app, instead of your cell phone number.
- Access the Lab Phonebook Directory. Search and dial employees using the Avaya Workplace app.
For more information about the soft phone, visit the Avaya Workplace page. To request activation of the soft phone, please send an email to TSC@lbl.gov.
As a reminder, reimbursements to LBNL for personal use of an LBNL cell phone may be applicable. Please refer to the Cellular Phone Procedures.
