In our ongoing efforts to enhance security and user experience across the Berkeley Lab community, IT is preparing for a significant upgrade to our authentication methods with the planned Lab-wide rollout of Passkeys later this year. As an initial step in this transition, we will soon be releasing an update to the authentication screens you use to log in to Lab services.
What’s Changing with the Login Screens?
You will soon notice a slight refresh to the login screens for Lab services. These changes are primarily cosmetic, designed to modernize the look and feel and improve the user interface. We want to assure you that these initial modifications are focused on visual and usability enhancements. It’s important to note that the login process itself will remain the same for now. Your current credentials and MFA methods will continue to work exactly as they do today.
Why These Changes Now? Paving the Way for Passkeys
While these initial updates to the login screens are cosmetic, the changes behind the scenes serve a critical purpose: they are laying the foundational groundwork for the upcoming Lab-wide implementation of Passkeys. Passkeys represent the next generation of authentication technology, offering significantly enhanced security and a more streamlined, user-friendly login experience.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we make these incremental improvements to our IT services. Our goal is to enhance your security and simplify your experience. Stay tuned for more communications regarding the Lab-wide rollout of Passkeys. We are committed to making this transition as smooth and beneficial as possible for the entire Lab community.
