Third-party apps that use only a username and password to access Google Accounts will no longer be supported beginning September 30, 2024. Google made this change as part of its ongoing focus on user safety. This older sign-in method puts users at an additional risk of sharing Google account credentials with third-party apps and devices, making it easier for others to gain unauthorized access to your account.
Employees using the Apple Mail app, Thunderbird, or Outlook to access their Lab email using less secure methods will see an issue with their email no longer syncing. Other third-party applications accessing Google Workspace with only a username and password will also encounter issues with syncing data.
This means that you will not receive any new emails or be able to send emails. This also applies to the Calendar and Contacts apps for those who use them and affects all Google email accounts.
Solution
If you are impacted by this change, IT recommends switching to the following supported options:
Mobile Devices
Follow the instructions in the IT FAQ to set up Lab email on iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices.
Desktops and Laptops
Use the Google Chrome browser for macOS and Windows computers to access Lab email and other Google Workspace applications.
Alternative Options
Other methods and third-party applications are not supported by Berkeley Lab IT. The following resources are provided as a reference.
