The IT Division provides the Berkeley Lab research community with data center facilities designed specifically to host high-performance computing equipment. The data center, a 5000 sq ft raised floor server room located in building 50B, was built in the 1970’s but has been upgraded several times to keep up with the increased power and cooling needs of today’s modern equipment. We are currently in the process of increasing the power from 900kW today to be 1.5MW by 2022 – just barely ahead of demand!
We offer data center space for PI-owned clusters that are fully built and managed by the Scientific Computing Group. PIs, who are considering the purchase of a HPC cluster, should engage us early in the planning process as there is limited availability.
