As cyber threats continue to evolve, especially with the rapid growth of AI-enabled attacks, keeping Berkeley Lab systems secure requires everyone to stay current with software updates. One simple but important step is making sure your VPN software is up to date.
The Lab’s VPN is a key part of our security infrastructure. It helps protect access to Berkeley Lab systems and data, especially when working remotely or connecting to internal resources.
Because of the need to keep critical software up-to-date Lab users may begin see`ing more notifications to update VPN software and other vital applications. These updates are expected and are part of IT’s ongoing work to strengthen protections across Berkeley Lab systems. If you receive a prompt to update your VPN client, please take action. In most cases, the update process is simple and only takes a few minutes.
“Keeping VPN software updated is one of the easiest and most effective ways that Lab employees can help protect their work and LBL systems,” said Jeffery Woodbury, IT Support Services Group Lead. “As AI changes the cybersecurity landscape, regular updates are no longer optional but an essential part of staying secure.”
Departmental administrators should also be aware that more VPN update notifications may be coming and should encourage users to complete them promptly. In some cases, IT support services may use tools such as NinjaOne to seamlessly automate the updates..
Everyone at Berkeley Lab has a role to play in cybersecurity. Staying vigilant, responding to update prompts, and keeping core tools like VPN software current are simple steps that make a meaningful difference.
