The desk phone in your Berkeley Lab office/work space is a critical tool in keeping you safe while you work at the Lab. Just as cyber security helps you work online safely, your dedicated Berkeley Lab office line has significant safety and emergency response benefits.
Earlier this year, we discussed the benefits of calling 911 on your Lab deskphone to provide a highly accurate location to the police department as well as Security and Emergency Services. But there are additional ways your desk phone is part of the essential emergency communications system.
Berkeley Lab deskphones are used by SES as part of LabAlert, the Lab’s mass emergency notification system to alert people working at the Lab of critical issues, such as evacuation, lock-down or shelter-in-place orders. Deskphones use the speakerphone feature to broadcast crucial time-critical announcements during an emergency, ensuring that whether you are at your desk or across the room, important instructions are heard.
“The desk phone is a critical part of our safety infrastructure at Berkeley Lab,” said Ian Servin of Security and Emergency Services. “From enabling precise location tracking during 911 calls to delivering LabAlert emergency notifications, it helps ensure people receive timely, life-saving information.”
Servin goes into greater detail about the importance of deskphones as part of LabAlert in this informative podcast.
Berkeley Lab desk phones are more than everyday tools but a vital part of the Lab’s emergency communication system, helping ensure rapid response and clear, reliable alerts. By understanding and using these capabilities, staff can play an active role in maintaining a safe and prepared workplace.
